Feel free to mock this list of supposed historians and presidential scholars, because the ranking of US Presidents by this group in a C-SPAN survey has some serious flaws:

  • Lincoln
  • Washington
  • FD Roosevelt
  • Teddy Roosevelt
  • Truman
  • Kennedy
  • Jefferson
  • Eisenhower
  • Wilson
  • Reagan
  • LB Johnson
  • Polk
  • Jackson
  • Monroe
  • Clinton
  • McKinley
  • John Adams
  • George HW Bush
  • John Quincy Adams
  • Madison
  • Cleveland
  • Ford
  • Grant
  • Taft
  • Carter
  • Coolidge
  • Nixon
  • Garfield
  • Taylor
  • Harrison
  • Van Buren
  • Arthur
  • Hayes
  • Hoover
  • Tyler
  • George W. Bush
  • Fillmore
  • Harding
  • WH Harrison
  • Pierce
  • A. Johnson
  • Buchanan

So let's see...

1.  There is a traitor ranked six spots ahead of Clinton, the best President of the last 40 years.

2.  2 spots ahead of Clinton?  Andrew Jackson, a genocidal maniac.

3.  On the other hand, nice to see Polk get some respect.  Completely undervalued President who did exactly what he set out to do and then left.

4.  Carter only 2 spots ahead of Nixon?  I'm not saying Carter was a great President, and then again Nixon should probably be down in the Tyler area...it just seems weird.

5.  The ranking of Harrison just seems kind of unfair, considering he died.

6.  Andrew Johnson is way too low; bump him up 10 spots and put Pierce in 3rd worst after Buchanan and Bush.

7. Obviously, 7th from the bottom is way too high for the leader of a coup.

Now Michael Phelps is apologizing to the Chinese. Why?  Um....well, I have no idea, except that he's promoting Mazda products in China.  Why that means he has to apologize for smoking some weed at a private party, something that's completely his own business and happened in a completely different country, is beyond me.

I feel bad for parents of autistic children, trying to figure out why something so bad happened to their child, but I also feel fabulous that once again they've had their bad science rejected in trying to blame vaccinations for the problem:

WASHINGTON – A special court has ruled against parents with autistic children, saying that vaccines are not to blame for their children's neurological disorder.

The judges in the cases said the evidence was overwhelmingly contrary to the parent's claims — and backed years of science that found no risk.

Naturally, I'm sure there will still be some anti-science types claiming bias, bad data, etc.  But so what?  The data is in, the science is solid and all parents who don't have their children vaccinated are doing is endangering the general population by making it easier for easily-prevented diseases like measles to spread.

There's an old saying from Tip O'Neil that "all politics is local;" it's something to keep in mind always when reading newspapers and online reporting, since any news is invariable filtered through local perceptions (I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just that it's always worth having in the back of the head).  But I do love it when it gets applied to sports, considering a David Haugh at the Tribune managed to finagle 936 words out of how Brett Favre retiring affects the Bears:

But while we wait for Favre's legacy to be edited predictably once again—how long before a bookmaker releases odds on Favre becoming a Viking?—Wednesday's development immediately created a ripple effect felt in Chicago.

Without Favre, none of the three quarterbacks on the Jets' roster— Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff and Erik Ainge—has played a full season. Expect the front office to be aggressive in pursuing a starter for new coach Rex Ryan. As the Bears know from seeking a veteran to compete with Kyle Orton, the most acceptable, available options are dwindling by the day.

Sigh.  Look, I know the Bears don't have the best record with GBs, but considering how many other needs they have on blocking, defense and special teams I have no problem with them ignoring the free agent market and sticking with Orton while picking up a 3rd-round QB in the draft, while attempting to fill some of the more pressing holes in free agency or trades.

Thankfully, it's only three days until baseball.

An anti-immigrant provision was stripped from the stimulus bill; naturally, this has the Know Nothings in a tizzy.

Marvel comics on iTunes?  That's an interesting development, especially considering the recent stories that Marvel may be bumping the price on some titles up to $3.99.  Looks like it won't be digital copies of newsstand issues though, but new material.
